What we’ll cover

Each week there will be self-paced learning and activities, followed by a workshop to work through concepts and apply methods with your peers.

Week 1
Why mission-led teams?

We start by exploring why adopting a mission-led operating model and cross-functional working can deliver better outcomes quicker and the fundamental characteristics.

We’ll also explore the common misconceptions and pitfalls.

Diagnose where you and your team are, what your goal is and get to know your peers. This week we’ll cover:

  • Motivation 2.0: Purpose, Mastery and Autonomy

  • The Product Operating Model

  • The Thrive Model

Week 2
Align

How do you get everyone on the same page, speaking the same language, picturing the same vision and collaborating to make it happen?

We explore:

  • Communicating a shared mission and leading with context

  • How to inspire with vision and communicate a clear strategy

  • The importance of agreeing clear principles

  • Why a shared cadence help everyone to go in the same direction

Week 3
Design

How do you design a cross-functional organisation and the teams and communities of practice within it? And how do you do this in a way that enables you to grow and adapt quickly?

This week we cover:

  • How to design around the strategy and vision

  • The kinds of work and the types of teams and skills required

  • Social units, team sizes and how to design for humans

  • Team Topology, Team Taxonomy and Dunbar’s Ripple Structure

  • How, when and why to grow and who to hire

Week 4
Empower

Finally we look at how to set teams up to execute and deliver on outcomes. How do you set goals, create the right planning cadences and ways to support and measure progress?

We look at:

  • How to set teams effective missions, objectives and goals

  • Why continuous discovery and delivery is important

  • The best ways to support teams and measure their progress

  • How to nurture a collaborative culture and agile practices

We’ll finish by bringing it all together with a mini capstone: a 5-minute lightening reflection from each participant that includes:

  • Your big ‘ah ha!’ moments

  • What you have already put into practice

  • Your plan for what to do next

Matt Walton

Matt is an edtech coach and advisor and works with edtech startups, scale ups and universities.

He was founding Chief Product Officer at FutureLearn, one of Europe’s biggest edtech platforms partnering with hundreds of universities, growing it to 14m learners and securing over £50m in investment.

He built an inclusive and collaborative culture building a product organisation from 0-65 people as the wider team grew to over 200.

He recently was fractional CPO at LIS, a new start up university and learned his product craft at the BBC.
